Air Pollution
Sunday, March 1st, 2009An important environmental problem that we face in our day to day life is pollution. Air, water and land are highly affected by explosion of population, increased industrialization etc. Air pollution plays a vital role in affecting the health of the Human beings. We breathe approximately 23,000 times a day and inhaling nearly 2000 liters of air. Along with this we also inhale various pollutants that are released from automobiles, factories and other sources.
The major air pollutants are Carbon monoxide, Sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and photochemical oxidants. Pollutants that enter into the environment through anthropogenic sources are called primary pollutants. Primary pollutants reacts with sunlight, moisture etc and undergo certain chemical and physical changes and thereby forms Secondary pollutant. They are more harmful than the primary pollutants.
On December 2, 1984, the tragedy of Bhopal has set an example for the pollution caused by hydrocarbon. Accidental leakage of Methylisocyanate from the storage tank of the fertilized factory took away over 3,000 human lives. Hydrocarbons cause irritation of eye, mucus membrane and bronchial constriction.
Lots and lots of new diseases are developing as a result of pollution. Hence care should be taken vigorously and the Government should pay more attention in protecting the environment from pollution.
